The Tacoma Scots have the honor of being named as the official Pierce County Sheriff Department Pipe Band. |
The swing of the kilt and the skirl of the pipes have delighted people for centuries. The grandeur of the pipes has inspired the Scots during times of war and provided entertainment in times of peace.
To honor this history, the Tacoma Scots Pipe Band has provided thousands of folks in the Pacific Northwest with the music and ceremony that stirs the hearts of young and old. The Tacoma Scots were formed in 1971. The musicians and dancers come from all over the Puget Sound area and are drawn by the organization's reputation for its competitive spirit, quality instruction and training. In true highland tradition, each member of the Tacoma Scots wears the Sinclair tartan in tribute to our Pipe Major and founder - William (Bill) Micenko.
Read on and tap your feet as you enjoy the background music of the tune "Bill Micenko and the Tacoma Scots", composed in 1993 by H. Ellis of Dundee, Scotland for the inauguration of Washington Governor Mike Lowry and dedicated to Bill and the band.

New pipers and drummers are welcome. Group and private lessons available |
The Tacoma Scots are a non-profit, tax-exempt organization, supported through paid public and private performances, concerts and prize money from competitive Highland games. Contributions from individuals, businesses and cultural organizations have greatly assisted in the continued development of the band.
Authorities on dancing have stated that Highland dancing is one of the most sophisticated forms of national dancing in the world. Unlike other national dancing, a great competitive tradition has been built up at Highland gatherings for centuries, which has led to constant refinement of the art. This competitive spirit can be easily seen in the performances of the dancers of the Tacoma Scots. Our Tacoma Scots dance corps performs ancient and modern dances. Many of the dancers are also accomplished pipers and drummers, which lends a versatility and unity unique to the organization. The dancers also compete in many of the Highland gatherings in the Pacific Northwest.
Pipe Major Micenko is one of the very few piping instructors in the United States who holds a teaching certificate from the Institute of Piping in Scotland, and has been piping for over 40 years. His piping expertise forms the foundation of quality on which the Tacoma Scots is based. Instruction is available year round in piping, drumming, Highland dancing and marching drill under the supervision of Pipe Major William Micenko.
Members of the Tacoma Scots are available as a band, small group or individual for parades, weddings, funerals, parties and special events.
We are pleased to work with you to add a memorable performance to your event or occasion.
